Do you ever watch James Bond movies? Then you have probably noticed that in many of them, the roulette game is played. Big money is wagered and large amounts of profit are made. There are also dramatic losses and cheating also happens at the roulette table.

Roulette, however, is more than an exciting movie setting; it is a casino game played by many people like you and me.

How Do You Play Online Roulette?

Time needed: 10 minutes.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to play online roulette.

  1. Select an Online Casino

The very first and perhaps most important thing to do if you want to play online roulette is: find a good casino that offers roulette. We’ve listed some reliable online casinos above, we hope there’s one to your liking!

  2. Choose a Roulette Game

Online there are several roulette variants to choose from. You have two main categories. The first is in the live casino, where you see how a real croupier spins the wheel via a webcam. Then you have games that work with a Random Number Generator(?). For this Howto, we have chosen the last one mentioned. Within these two categories, there are many other interesting roulette variations.

  3. Place Your Bets

In the game of roulette, you make a bet with chips. The chips have a certain value and determine the amount of your bet. How much you bet is entirely up to you, but a high bet can be rewarded with a high win, while a low bet is “rewarded” with a lower win.

You can bet on a single number, a group of numbers, or a characteristic of a number (red/black or even/even). Each bet has its own odds and payouts. Before playing, always pay attention to the minimum and maximum bets, which can differ.

  4. When Can You Bet?

In online roulette: you have all the time in the world to place your bets, and when you’re done, you click on a button to spin the wheel and the ball.

In live roulette: the moment the croupier says “place your bets”, you can bet. When the ball is thrown into the game, you can no longer place your bets. This is obviously to prevent you from betting at the last minute when the outcome is almost predictable.

  5. A Number Will Fall

The ball will slowly slow down and come to a stop on a certain slot. In the live casino, the croupier will call out the number and color, and you’ll know if you’ve won. For the sake of clarity, a marker is also placed on the fallen number. The next round begins when the marker is off the table but not before the payout is made.

In an RNG game, the same applies, only here you don’t have a croupier calling out the number and color, but it comes up big on the screen,

  6. Payout

The amount you win in roulette is calculated based on a mathematical sum: if you bet one chip on a certain amount and the ball falls on that number, the croupier pays you. You get your one chip back, and this is increased by (36/n) – 1 chip. The 36 stands, of course, for the number of numbers on the roulette table, and n is the number of numbers on which you had bet. If you had bet on 1 number, your profit would be quite high.

When you bet on several numbers with one chip (if you bet wisely, you can play with 4 numbers at once), your winnings will be lower. If you lose at the game, you lose your bet.

If you bet on red and the ball lands on a red square, you win 1x your bet.

  7. What is the House Edge?

The observant reader has already noticed that we are talking about 36 numbers while there are 37 numbers on the cylinder. After all, the 0 also counts. This is, therefore, the banker’s advantage. In fact, the banker’s advantage is 1/37 part, short of 3.7 percent of the total bet made per spin.

If the ball falls on the zero slots in some roulette games, you get half of your bet back. There is no play on single chances (red or black, even or odd, high or low). The house advantage is then only 1.35 percent.

Online Roulette Betting Options

The designers have added numerous betting options to make the roulette game more versatile, exciting, and simply more fun. Let’s take a look at some of the different types of bets you can place.

Betting on Single Numbers

This is the simplest bet you can make in roulette. You bet on one particular number, and you can only win if the ball comes to a stop on the particular number. For example, if you bet on number 11, you will only win if number 11 actually falls. As you can imagine, this doesn’t happen very often. Therefore you win €35 for every €1 you wager when you win such a bet.

Groups of Numbers

This option is more diverse and offers different possibilities. Instead of betting on a single number, here, you bet on a group of numbers. It can be a group of 1-18 or 19-36, or as small as two numbers like 1 and 2.

As you might guess, the larger the range, the lower the payout you will receive. For example, if you choose to bet 1-18 and you win, you win 1x your bet. If you bet the two numbers as in our example, you would win 16x your bet.

Characteristics of Numbers

These are the bets we recommend for beginners who want to become more familiar with roulette. (This doesn’t mean they aren’t also great bets for experienced players.) Instead of betting on specific numbers or groups of numbers, bet on what we’ve called “the characteristics” of the number.

This includes bets on the colour of the number or even or odd numbers. If you win such a bet, you win 1x your bet. When you bet black and a black number falls, then you win. If you bet even and an even number falls, then you win. It’s that simple!

What’s the Difference Between American, European and French Roulette?

French roulette has a few minor rule variations called ‘la partage’ and ‘en prison. The ‘la partage’ rule provides a greater advantage for the player. It ensures that you get your stake back if the ball lands on zero. The en prison rule is similar. The difference is that this rule only applies if you have bet on so-called single chances (i.e. red or black, even or odd, high or low). You also have the choice of returning half of the chips or leaving them in prison.

Blaise Pascal; Genius and Gambler

The numbers seem to are located haphazardly on the cylinder, but this is not the case. Blaise Pascal calculated the locations of the numbers. He devised a system in which no number <18 and >18 would lie next to each other. The exception was the numbers 5 and 10 because these are the numbers where the cylinder splits into two parts. Also, the colours red and black would always alternate. This is the way they guarantee a fair payout.
